Invention of the QWERTY keyboard
The QWERTY keyboard was invented by Christopher Sholes and Amos Densmore in 1875. The difference between the QWERTY keyboard and the normal typewriter keyboard was that the most common letters were not so close together unlike the typewriter keyboard where the letters were arranged in alphabetical order. This was done so that the keys would not be jammed when the typist worked quickly.
Sholes claimed that the new arrangement was scientific and would add speed and efficiency. However, the only efficiency it had was to slow the typist down, since the typists fingers had to cover more distance to type.
Even so, the advantages of the keyboard far outweighed the disadvantages. Typists soon memorized the crazy letter arrangement and the QWERTY keyboard became a quick success.
