The atom is a basic unit of matter consisting of a dense central nucleus surrounded by a cloud of negatively charged electrons . the nucleus is the very dense region consisting of nucleons , protons and neutrons at the center of an atom . The atomic nuckeys contains a mix of positively charged protons and electrically neutral neutrons . the electrons of an atom are bound to the nucleus by the electromagnetic force .
The name atom came from the Greek , which means uncuttable , or indivisible . Something that cannot be divided further . It was first proposed by early Indian and Greek Philosophers . During the 17th and 18th centuries , its was said that atoms are physical basis for this idea by showing that certain substance could not be further broken down by chemical methods.
Only during the 19th and early 20th centuries , its was proven that the subatomic components and structure inside the atom , thereby demonstrating that the ‘atom’ was divisible , proving quantum mechanics were used successfully to model the atom .
